The past five days have been a major work project onboard Dash and involved the installation of a new Wallas 30DT heat system with a partially successful test run this morning. The heater worked fine but the air blower did not, so a new controller is on its way from Scan Marine Equipment (U.S. vender). Hopefully that will be the fix. So far, aside from the one function not working, the heater works great!
NOTE:
Replacement controller fixed the problem, all functions now working!
Below is a series of shots of the installation I have been working on, as you can see it is a very tight fit in the space where it is mounted. This was the only place it could go given the design parameters of the system itself. There are limits to exhaust and duct lengths and the heater needs to be able to be accessed for service. A stern mount location is recommended.

The heater unit itself mounted below the port berth, on the forward bulkhead. 2.5 gallon diesel tank below. The heater can be lowered from the bracket for service, or the bottom portion of the heater can be removed to access the electronics. The tank can also be removed for filling. The heat ducts are covered with an insulated sleeve, the longer one going to the starboard berth. The fresh air intake ducts are not covered with insulation. |
Vertical shot from the bulkhead. The fuel line is long enough the tank can be moved to the cabin floor for filling. |
There is just enough room for the exhaust duct below the berth cover board. The hose complex in the corner required enlarging the cover board opening. |
Only about an inch or so had to be removed and the cushion still had enough of a notch in it so it did not have to be redone. The larger hose is the holding tank pump out hose, the smaller white one is the holding tank vent hose. |
Exhaust duct with insulated cover passing behind the holding tank pump out hose. |
Exhaust outlet near screened cabin port hole. Heat is not a factor affecting the screen but obviously it must be closed during operation. The vent outlet to lower left is for the holding tank. |
External cold air intake duct |
The extra ducting is to provide some down slope for shedding possible splash water from cockpit cold air intake vent. |
Fresh air intake vent, just below the helm station |
The interior cold air return vent is on left just below the external cold air duct and the insulated starboard cabin heat duct. To the right is the port cabin warm air duct. |
