Leg 7-Whitefish Pt. to Sault Ste Marie (Day 10)

0430 Alarm went off. I will eat breakfast before departure.

0600 Departed anchorage. Already 4 ships indicated by AIS! I hope the Canadian Lock will be open? Cold morning (47F) and I had furnace on lowest setting so it got cool inside last night (58F). One commercial fisherman up before me already tending his nets.

I REALLY DO LEAVE AT SUNRISE!

Forgot my anchor light last night! The other two boats did not. Sunny bright day, more like real summer, but cool.

GETTING READY FOR LOCK AND DOCK - BOAT HOOK, GLOVES, AND LANDING LOOP ON BENCH, FENDERS AND LINES OUT ON TRAMPOLINE.

0820 Trip 13 NM so far, speed 5.3 knots under power at 3600 rpm. OAT now 67F. Seven ships on AIS.

OLDER LAKER-UP BOUND

A MEETING OF THE OLD AND NEW

In 2012 the Canadian Lock was broken down and I had a rough lock through on the U.S. side in high winds, so I'm hoping it is operational today?

NOW ABANDONED PT. IROQUOIS LIGHT

1200 Large ship is catching me in a narrow part of the channel with depths inadequate to get outside the buoys. I'm hustling, like the little ship that could!

1230 Called Canadian Lock on the VHF 14 and the lock is up and running.  I am grateful! The Canadian Lock is much easier to transit and is designed for smaller boats rather than large ships.  Gave them my ETA.

JUST EXITING THE CANADIAN LOCK

1300 I locked through, the only boat this time. Passed through with no problems, but it is always a balancing act to do it alone. Locking through is normally at least a two person exercise.

Just as I left the lock I called the marina on VHF 9 and gave them my ETA and request for pump out and fuel. They would be waiting. I told them five minutes, but just as I crossed the river and approached the marina entrance I saw the bow of a 1000' Laker coming out of the U.S. lock, he was hidden behind another up bound ship. I checked his speed on AIS (2 kts) and could have crossed his bow but decided it would be more prudent to wait. (see pics).

1000 FOOT LAKER COMING OUT OF LOCK BLOCKING MY PATH TO MARINA

UP BOUND SHIP INITIALLY BLOCKED VIEW OF 1000' LAKER JUST BEHIND.  AIS REVEALED HE WAS IN FACT MOVING, BUT ONLY AT 2KTS!
IMPOSING!
GLAD I WAITED TO CROSS THE RIVER TO MARINA!

Docked, fueled up, and went to the slip. Calm conditions made it fairly easy though the river has about 3 kts current this year, with the high water, and some of the flow enters and swirls around the harbor so it made me work a little.

PUMPED OUT, FUELED UP, AT DOCK!
RED TANKS ARE GAS, YELLOW IS FURNACE FUEL, AND BLUE IS SPARE WATER IF PUMP FAILS.

1400 Called the local Yamaha outboard repair shop to arrange for the motor to be picked up and checked.
